This work was way outside of my typical comfort zone, and I was working with my friend/beta pretty close to the deadline to cut out the parts that weren't working and bolster the parts that were. I'm proud of myself for taking a swing at something casefic-ish, and for stepping outside of my typical kind of wheelhouse to try and make something that my Seekrit Santa recipient would like--and for not backing out when it wasn't going quite the way I wanted, partway through. Conundrum seemed to enjoy it, and so I'm counting this one as a success!

I feel a little guilty that I'm still up in the air re: whether I'm going to finish my dS big bang, and keep writing these little snippets for other fandoms, but since I wrote this one on a night when I wouldn't have been able to work on my big bang anyways I've elected to not let myself feel too bad about it.

Yes, that is a due South quote you see there in the summary, because I am deeply predictable and apparently cannot help myself.

I'm considering going back and editing this so it's a fully American college AU--I attempted to set it in modern day Japan, but I'm a little uncomfortable with how American it is for a fic ostensibly set in a different country, and I'm not sure I could de-Westernize it to the extent that I'd like to without doing a major overhaul and some serious research into Japanese pop culture in the mid 2000s.
