ao3 meme

1) How many works do you have on AO3?

39, apparently, which is a lot more than I ever anticipated!

2) What’s your total AO3 word count?

37,168

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

15 fandoms for things I wrote; 21 fandoms for things I've posted to ao3. Fandoms I've written things for include due South, Check Please, Until We Meet Again, Wilby Wonderful, SOTUS, Ingredients, Black Donnellys, and Prairie Home Companion.

4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Bright Light City (Check Please, 1.5K), Video Killed The Radio Star (But iTunes Brought It Back) (Bungou Stray Dogs, 2.7K), Rhyming Scheme (SOTUS, 1K), No/Nay/Never (Circle One) (Check Please, 3.6K), A Different Kind Of McStilinski (Teen Wolf/Stargate Atlantis, 469 words)

Don't know what is says about me that four out of those five are about the intersections of societal pressures, personal growth, and interpersonal relationships - and the remaining one is pure crack.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try to, but I am not always very good at it. If someone leaves a comment on something soon after I've posted it, I'm practically guaranteed to respond to them, but if something's older it can be hit-or-miss. Not out of any attempt to be rude or ungrateful, but I sometimes struggle with what to say and then before I know it two months have passed and I feel like at that point it's too late to respond. For similar oh-god-how-people and/or spoons-having related reasons, I'm also much more likely to reply to comments on things for relatively small fandoms - there are all kinds of comments on my Fraser!Lan Wangji manip that I've never responded to.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

All Dressed Up To Go Away is about a funeral so...

7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Despite my own personal fondness for bittersweet endings, it seems that most of what I write ends up having a happy ending, so it's hard to say! E|H|L (Go!) ends with Team winning a race and then flirting with his boyfriend at practice, which is pretty happy? That, or Wild Roses, which is self-indulgent curtain fic ft. a kind of marriage proposal, or else something like Ice Grows or Like Reindeer Do, which deal with angsty themes only to end in utter soft marshmallow fluff.

Or Lofsongur, which has a happy ending in the euphemistic as well as the literal sense ¬‿¬

8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the wackiest one you’ve written?

DO I EVER! I love crossovers, and although I haven't written many I like to think I've gone for quality over quantity :D You would think that my wildest crossover would be the Fritty AU, but pairing aside crossing due South and Check Please over with Hockey RPF isn't in and of itself all that surprising. The South Beach Shuffle, a podfic my rl best friend and I wrote and recorded for Into A Bar, revolves around a Prairie Home Companion/Adventure Zone crossover, and I think that probably takes the cake.

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not really, and never on ao3; I remember that I wrote a comment!fic of some kind on tumblr once that someone decided they just absolutely needed to tell me was The Worst Thing Ever, but I wouldn't really call even that hate.

10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Pass. I felt like one of my fics needed a sex scene once and writing it was like pulling teeth. I'm a fan of fade-to-black.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

lol honestly I have a hard time imagining someone wanting to steal my fics. Not in a self deprecating way or anything, but I tend to write short fics for small audiences (often mostly intended for an audience of one: myself), and I can't imagine anything I write getting someone the kind of traction to make it worth their while to go to the effort to steal it.

12) Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope!

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! My real life best friend & I cowrote The South Beach Shuffle. We also cowrote a quickly-abandoned WIP (that's still up on fanfiction.net, but no, I will not be sharing its name) when we were like 13.

14) What’s your all time favorite ship?

Aagghhh I don't know! What's your favorite ice cream? It might be this one or that one today and yet another tomorrow, but as long as it's not something you hate (ick, sorbet) it's all ice cream.

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

For a while I was working on a noirish due South AU of the Untamed from the POV of Jiang Cheng. I still really really love the concept and a lot of what I managed to get written - I like the noir voice I had going a lot - but I don't think it'll ever see the light of day.

16) What are your writing strengths?

Vignettes, I think: small scenes that pack a punch. Whether that's a punch of imagery/description, something funny, something sad, whatever, I think that's what I'm probably best at. I also personally think that I'm fairly decent at coming up with cool scenarios, even if I rarely turn most of them into actual fic; I like tossing what-if ideas around.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

Most things! Beginnings, endings, moving the plot forward, *having* a plot...you name it, I've struggled with it.

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I guess it depends on why you're doing it and whether you expect your audience to understand it. I can't see myself doing this for the most part unless it's something that the fandom as a whole tends to leave untranslated, such as the names of weapons in the Untamed, but I also don't really speak any non-English languages with any kind of confidence. If a character canonically tends to drop in a word here or there from a different language, imitating that in their dialogue in your fic feels perfectly reasonable, and writing non-English dialogue because you don't want most of your audience to get most of what's being said can be done to good effect when it's deployed smartly (I'm thinking specifically of how this is used in The Dragon-King's Temple).

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Anywhere on the internet? Harry Potter. On AO3? Teen Wolf.

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Ooohh, this is a hard one. For a long time it was Seven Years Bad Luck, but I've written a lot of things that I like in the past few years! I love Spend My Living, it's exactly the kind of wacky shenanigans song!fic that I'm into, but I don't know that I would say that it's my favorite. That honor might have to go to Wild Roses (Every Third Tuesday) - at least for today.
